Social Action

Central Reform Temple is deeply committed to the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam, “the healing, repair and transformation of our world.” Through our Social Action initiatives, we reach out to the broader community with volunteer opportunities for active involvement in the work for justice and peace.

Members of the CRT community are active in a number of Boston area organizations to truly live out Judaism’s ethical teachings. Currently, CRT members have relationships with the following organizations. To learn more about them, and to explore the possibility of getting involved, please click on the organization’s name or email socialaction@centralreformtemple.org. We invite you to join us!

HHD Food Drive
It has been a tradition (I think 10+ years constitutes a ‘tradition’ for us) for Central Reform to have a High Holy Day food drive to benefit the work of the Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB). The roughly 1000 pounds of food we collect each year provides meals for our neighbors in need. This year, between the terrible ravages of Covid-19 and emergence of the urgent press for racial justice, many more people in our community are experiencing even greater need.

Since we will be unable to collect food during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur this year, we have been in conversation with the GBFB to determine the best way that we can continue to support them as in years past. It is likely that the most helpful means will be through the collection of money. I will provide details on how we can best do this in the September Kol Nefesh, as we draw closer to the Holy Days. Stay tuned.

Of course, many of you are already actively engaged in Tikkun Olam in a variety of ways. If you think that others in our congregation might be interested in learning more about the organizations you are involved with, please let us know. There’s no limit to the work that needs to be done.

Our Social Action Committee is chaired by Caren Peters. To contact her, email socialaction@centralreformtemple.org.
