About Emmanuel Center

Emmanuel Center is the programmatic partnership of Central Reform Temple and Emmanuel Church. Our two congregations are faithfully rooted in our distinct religious traditions and shared spiritual heritage. We strive to model compassionate encounters between Judaism and Christianity that affirm the difficult challenges of history and aspire to new levels of understanding. We collaborate with arts and educational groups on events that explore spiritual and ethical perspectives on our shared human experience.

Learn Hebrew!

Interested in learning or brushing up your Hebrew? Whether you’re a complete beginner or it’s been a few decades since your Bar/Bat Mitzvah, you’re invited to join interfaith couple and language lovers Carolyn Beard and Michael Vimont in a Hebrew Reading Group, a joint offering of Central Reform Temple and Emmanuel Church. Emmanuel Center’s interfaith Hebrew Reading Group meets over Zoom from 6:00PM-7:00PM on Wednesday evenings. Newcomers (yes, even complete beginners!) are welcome. We read together lines from the Bible, we consider fundamentals of Hebrew grammar, paying special attention to how language impacts our study of the Bible and understanding of ancient and modern Jewish cultures. To join our conversation, contact Carolyn and/or Michael at info@centralreformtemple.org. All levels of Hebrew are welcome!

The Facilitators

Carolyn Beard is a Master of Divinity candidate at Harvard Divinity School. After graduating from Princeton University in 2018 with a degree in Comparative Literature and certificates in German, Latin, Judaic Studies, and European Cultural Studies, Carolyn moved to Cologne, Germany, where, with a Fulbright research grant, she researched the life and legacy of “Holocaust martyr” St. Edith Stein. Carolyn now lives in Cambridge with her fiancé, Michael, and two feline house goblins, Maui and Potato. She hopes to do doctoral work in Holocaust theology and theodicy and is an aspirant to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church of the USA.

Michael Vimont holds a Master’s degree in Social Anthropology from Oxford, where he conducted his thesis research in Prague on the role of folklore as a means of constructing Czech nationalism. Michael now works professionally in applied and academic research in Psychophysics and Natural Language Processing at the automated driving startup Perceptive Automata. He has a background in Near East Archaeology and ancient Semitic languages, including Classical Hebrew and Akkadian, and has incorporated this in his own interpretation of biblical sources and observance of Judaism.
